What Is Emergency Quota?

Emergency Quota is a small block of seats/berths set aside on each train for genuine emergencies — typically 1–4 berths per class. It is released by the Station Superintendent (SS) or Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) for urgent travel situations.

Who Qualifies for Emergency Quota?

Medical emergency: patient travelling to hospital or returning after treatment (doctor's certificate required). Death in family: passenger travelling due to death of immediate family member (death certificate or hospital document). Natural disaster: displacement due to floods, earthquake, etc. Official government duty: government officials with official orders. The SS has discretion — there is no guarantee.

How to Apply for Emergency Quota

Go to the Station Superintendent's (SS) office at the railway station (usually near the station master's office). Present your situation and supporting documents (medical certificate, death certificate, etc.). The SS will verify and, if approved, issue an EQ ticket. Be at the station at least 2 hours before departure. Emergency Quota is NOT available online — no IRCTC portal exists for it.

Difference: Emergency Quota vs Tatkal

Tatkal is available to everyone online for a premium. Emergency Quota is available only for genuine emergencies at the station. Tatkal charges a premium (₹200–600). Emergency Quota is at normal fare. Tatkal is bookable from 24 hours before; EQ is closer to departure. Tatkal is reliable; EQ depends on SS discretion.
