Berth numbers 1–8 per coupe in SL and 3AC

In a standard Sleeper (SL) or 3 Tier AC (3AC) coach, each main coupe has 6 berths numbered in pairs: Lower (1 and 4), Middle (2 and 5), Upper (3 and 6) facing each other. Berths 7 and 8 in each bay are the Side Lower and Side Upper respectively — narrower and along the corridor.

Full coach layout: berths 1 to 72 in Sleeper

A full Sleeper coach has 72 berths — berths 1 to 64 in 8 main coupe groups, and berths 65 to 72 in the remaining end bay. Lower berths double as seats during the day; middle berths are fold-down and only available at night after lower berth passengers agree.

Coach order from the engine

Trains generally run: locomotive — guard van or power car — 1A/2A/3AC coaches — Sleeper coaches — General coaches toward the rear. The chart pasted at your boarding station or sent via SMS by IRCTC shows the exact coach order for your specific train.

Which berth is best?

Lower berth is most convenient — accessible all day, used as a seat during daytime, and easiest to board. Upper berth gives more privacy and space overhead. Middle berth is least preferred — only usable after 10 PM when lower berth passengers sleep. Side lower is popular for solo travellers.

How to find your coach on the platform

Station platforms usually have a coach position indicator board or marker showing where each coach stops. Look for 'Coach Composition' charts on the platform or check the IRCTC SMS/email for your coach number and position.

Common Questions

Which berth is best in Sleeper class?

Lower berth is most popular — easiest access, usable as a seat during day, and preferred by elderly and families. Upper berth gives more privacy. Side Lower is popular for solo passengers on shorter journeys.

What does S1, B1, or A1 mean on my ticket?

S = Sleeper coach, B = 3 Tier AC coach, A = 2 Tier AC coach. The number after (S1, S2, B1, B2) is the coach sequence number within that class from the engine end. Your berth is only in that specific coach.

Is side lower berth better than middle berth?

Yes for most passengers. Side lower is accessible any time and usable as a seat. Middle berth can only be used after 10 PM when lower berth passengers agree to sleep — before that it must stay folded.

How do I know which direction my coach is on the platform?

Station platforms show a 'Coach Composition' board or chart with the order of coaches for that train. Many stations also have painted numbers on the platform indicating where each coach stops.
