WL (GNWL) vs TQWL

WL on your PNR usually refers to GNWL (General Waitlist), which comes from the main quota. TQWL (Tatkal Waitlist) is a separate queue in the Tatkal quota — and the two behave very differently.

Key difference: quota source

GNWL is in the general quota — the largest pool of seats. Cancellations from any general-quota passenger benefit the GNWL queue. TQWL is in the Tatkal quota — a small, premium-priced pool where passengers almost never cancel because they booked last-minute with a need.

Confirmation rate comparison

GNWL 1-10: 80-95% chance. GNWL 11-30: 38-80%. GNWL 31-50: 15-38%. TQWL 1: 15-25%. TQWL 2: 5-15%. TQWL 3+: less than 5%.

When you might have TQWL

TQWL appears when you booked a Tatkal ticket but Tatkal seats were already full. Even TQWL 1 rarely confirms because Tatkal passengers almost never cancel.

What to do

If you have GNWL below 30, track PNR and set alerts — there is a real chance. If you have TQWL of any number, book a backup immediately. TQWL almost never moves.

Frequently asked questions

Is TQWL worse than regular WL?

Yes — TQWL is much harder to confirm than GNWL. GNWL 20 is significantly better than TQWL 1 in terms of confirmation probability.

Can TQWL 1 confirm?

TQWL 1 has about a 15-25% chance if a Tatkal passenger cancels. This is rare — Tatkal passengers usually need to travel urgently, so cancellations are uncommon.

How do I know if I have TQWL or GNWL?

Your PNR status shows the prefix: TQWL/3 or GNWL/15. Enter your PNR on PNR Alert to see the exact waitlist type and current position.
