How does RAC upgrade happen today?
RAC upgrade to a full berth happens when a confirmed (CNF) passenger does not board the train. The TTE checks boarding at departure station and assigns vacated berths to RAC passengers in order. RAC 1 gets upgraded first, then RAC 2, and so on. This process happens onboard — not before departure.
RAC upgrade probability today by number
RAC 1: 90-95% chance of getting a full berth (almost always at least one no-show). RAC 2: 80-90%. RAC 3: 70-85%. RAC 4-5: 55-70%. RAC 6-10: 40-60%. RAC 11-20: 20-40%. Beyond RAC 20: Under 20%. These are onboard figures — no-shows happen on most trains.
What to do if you have RAC today
1. Board the train — RAC guarantees your right to board. 2. Find your allocated half-berth (berth number is in your PNR after chart prep). 3. Approach the TTE soon after departure and ask about vacant berths. 4. The TTE upgrades RAC in numerical order — RAC 1 first. 5. Even if not upgraded, you keep your half-berth for the whole journey.
