RAC 1 vs RAC 2

RAC 1 and RAC 2 are both excellent positions — you are guaranteed to board the train and share a berth. The difference is that RAC 1 gets upgraded to a full berth before RAC 2 does.

Why RAC 1 is better

RAC 1 is first in the upgrade queue. When the very first confirmed passenger cancels or does not board, RAC 1 gets the full berth. RAC 2 gets it when the second slot opens.

Probability comparison

RAC 1: ~95% chance of getting a full berth (before or during journey). RAC 2: ~85-92% chance. Both are excellent positions — the difference is mainly about timing of when you get upgraded.

Both guarantee travel

Regardless of whether RAC 1 or RAC 2 gets upgraded to a full berth, both passengers travel on a shared side-lower berth if no upgrade happens. Neither is denied boarding.

What to do with RAC 1 or RAC 2

Frequently asked questions

Will RAC 1 definitely get a full berth?

Not 100% — but about 95% of the time, yes. The rare exception is on less-busy trains with very few cancellations.

Will RAC 2 get a full berth?

In about 85-92% of cases, RAC 2 gets upgraded — either before chart (from cancellations) or on the train (from the TTE). If RAC 1 gets a full berth, RAC 2 often gets one soon after.

Who gets upgraded first — RAC 1 or RAC 2?

Always RAC 1 first. The upgrade queue follows the RAC number in order: RAC 1, then RAC 2, then RAC 3, and so on.
