PQWL vs TQWL

PQWL and TQWL are two of the hardest waitlist types to confirm in Indian Railways. Neither is a strong position, but PQWL has a slightly better chance because it can benefit from pooled quota cancellations.

PQWL vs TQWL — both are difficult

PQWL (Pooled Quota Waitlist) is shared among multiple intermediate stations. TQWL (Tatkal Waitlist) is the Tatkal quota waitlist. Both have low confirmation rates compared to GNWL or RLWL.

Why PQWL has a slight edge

PQWL can move if any passenger in the pooled quota cancels — and passengers cancel for normal reasons (illness, plan changes). TQWL only moves if a Tatkal passenger cancels, which is rare because Tatkal is booked urgently.

Probability comparison

PQWL 1: 20-30%. PQWL 2-3: 8-20%. PQWL 4-7: 2-8%. PQWL 8+: under 2%. TQWL 1: 15-25%. TQWL 2: 5-15%. TQWL 3+: under 5%.

Practical advice for both

For PQWL above 3 or any TQWL: book an alternative immediately. Cancel the PQWL/TQWL ticket 24+ hours before departure for a partial refund. Do not rely on either to confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better: PQWL or TQWL?

PQWL is slightly better than TQWL at low numbers (1-3), but both have poor confirmation rates. Neither is a status to rely on for travel.

Should I cancel PQWL 5 or TQWL 2?

Yes — cancel both and book a confirmed or GNWL ticket instead. The probability of either confirming is very low.

How do I find an alternate train?
