GNWL vs PQWL

GNWL and PQWL are two very different waitlist types. GNWL comes from the main train quota; PQWL is a pooled quota shared across multiple intermediate stations.

The core difference

GNWL (General Waitlist) is the main queue — all passengers who didn't get a seat from the origin station. PQWL (Pooled Quota Waitlist) is a separate small pool shared between multiple intermediate stations.

Confirmation rate comparison

GNWL 1-10: 80-95% — very high. GNWL 11-30: 38-80% — good to moderate. PQWL 1: 20-30% — low. PQWL 2-5: 2-20% — very low. PQWL 6+: almost never confirms.

Why PQWL is harder

PQWL depends only on passengers in a shared pool cancelling. The shared quota has fewer seats and cancellations — so even PQWL 1 can fail to confirm when GNWL 30 would have confirmed easily.

What to do with PQWL

If your ticket shows PQWL above 3, start looking at alternatives now. Book a backup. If you have GNWL, track PNR movement and set a WhatsApp alert — most GNWL below 30 have a real chance.

Frequently asked questions

Is GNWL always better than PQWL?

Yes, in almost all situations. The only exception is very specific trains where the PQWL pool happens to have unusual cancellation volume — which is rare.

Can PQWL ever confirm?

Yes — PQWL 1-3 can confirm on some routes, but the probability is low (8-30%). Above PQWL 5, confirmation is extremely rare.

My PNR shows PQWL — what should I do?

Check how many days until departure. If more than 5 days away and PQWL is above 3, book an alternative train. If PQWL 1-2, watch daily and decide by 3 days before departure.
